Buriram’s impressive performances in the AFC Champions League campaign helped Thailand to get above Australia in the AFC club competitions ranking.

With powerhouse Buriram United reaching the knockout stage of the 2018 AFC Champions League, Thailand sit in eight place in the rankings with 57.403 points, and are ahead of Australia as the latter sat in ninth place with 53.916 points.

According to the rankings, Thailand are the best-ranked in the Southeast Asia (ASEAN), followed by Malaysia, Philippines, Vietnam, Singapore, Myanmar, Indonesia, Cambodia and Laos, respectively.

Meanwhile, China top the AFC list, leading the way with 95.928 points, Qatar are ranked in second with 94.003 points and South Korea occupy third spot thanks to the 86.028 points they have amassed.

Benjamin Tan, Deputy CEO of the Thai League and the FA Thailand Club Licensing Director, said “The shift in ranking positions are not easy so we are delighted and humbled with the latest AFC club competitions ranking. The improvements are made possible due to the consistent and superior performances by our club representatives from Thailand, including Buriram United.”

So, why is the AFC club competitions ranking important?

To begin with, the ranking is used to determine whether clubs from each nation compete in the AFC Champions League or in the less prestigious AFC Cup. It also decides how many teams from each country play in these competitions.

While a national team’s FIFA ranking contributes a weight of 10 percent to this ranking system, it is club performances in AFC competitions that are largely the deciding factor. The ranking allocates points for clubs’ performances in the past four editions of AFC competitions and an average for each country is calculated at a weight of 90 percent.

Thailand managed to remain in the top ten positions of the AFC club competitions ranking, and Benjamin Tan remarked that “This means we will have two direct slots in the AFC Champions League group stage and two in playoff slots (from the current 1+2), but we will deserve the slots in 2021 if we maintain our performances. So, it is very important for us to support our participating clubs in the continental competition together.”
